I was leafing through the latest Pevsner on Wiltshire in a local bookshop and went to the Marlborough entry. Naturally.
Although previously Pevsner had a shortish piece on no 133 High Street, Marlborough (“The Merchant’s House”), the new one seems to go back to the partly updated ) first edition. No mention of The Merchant’s House, but a brief reference to WH Smith (the previous owners of 133 who sold it c 1990) having nice detailing, a fine staircase and a good panelled room. As chairman of the Trust which has been restoring this grade II* house for the last 20 years I would just like to point out that it is featured in Simon Jenkins’s “England’s Thousand Best Houses” (2 stars) and other books and articles thanks to its exceptional surviving features including wall paintings which are unique in this country. Perhaps you would kindly update the entry on this remarkable building when you next update the Wiltshire edition.
